James L. Murdy To Board

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- February 11, 1999 -- Allegheny Teledyne Incorporated (NYSE:ALT) announced today that James L. Murdy, 60, has been named to the company's board of directors. Mr. Murdy also serves as the company's executive vice president, finance and administration, and chief financial officer.

"Jim has been an important part of the senior management of Allegheny Teledyne and before that Allegheny Ludlum for over ten years. His background, experience and knowledge of the company is of great value to Allegheny Teledyne as we continue to focus on our strategic growth objectives while maintaining a strong financial position," said Richard P. Simmons, Allegheny Teledyne's chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Mr. Murdy joined Allegheny Ludlum Corporation as senior vice president and chief financial officer in 1988. He became senior vice president and chief financial officer for Allegheny Teledyne upon the Allegheny Ludlum-Teledyne combination in August 1996. He was named executive vice president for finance and administration later that year. Mr. Murdy had previously served as a director of Allegheny Ludlum Corporation from 1988 until its combination with Teledyne.

Before joining Allegheny Ludlum, Mr. Murdy served as executive vice president and chief financial officer for Gulf Oil Corporation and controller for Occidental Petroleum Corporation. He holds a certified public accountant's certificate and served on the audit staff of Deloitte & Touche LLP in Los Angeles. He is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University of Los Angeles.

Mr. Murdy is also a director of Federated Investors, Inc.
