PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- September 4, 2001 -- The United
Steelworkers of America (USWA) called a strike at 12:01 AM Pacific
Time on September 4, 2001 at the Wah Chang operation located in
Albany, OR. Wah Chang is an Allegheny Technologies Incorporated
(NYSE:ATI) company. The strike affects approximately 640 USWA-represented
employees. The plant was safely idled prior to the strike.
"It's unfortunate that the United Steelworkers of America
chose to take this action," said Lynn D. Davis, president of
Wah Chang. "We are disappointed that on August 1 the local
union membership failed to ratify the contract which had been agreed
upon by the USWA, the company, and the local union leadership. Nevertheless,
we were fully prepared to work toward reaching an acceptable agreement
when the USWA called this strike. We plan to safely restart the
plant within the next few weeks in order to continue meeting the
needs of our loyal customers."
The USWA strike does not impact other Allegheny Technologies operations.
