DALLAS, Texas -- April 17, 2006 -- Atmos Energy Corporation (NYSE:ATO) today observes its 100 year anniversary of providing clean natural gas for warmth, cooking and a variety of other energy uses. The business was formally founded on April 16, 1906, as a small natural gas company serving about 4,500 customers in the frontier town of Amarillo, Texas. Today, Atmos Energy is the largest natural gas-only distributor in the U.S. with more than 3.2 million gas utility customers and approximately 4,500 employees.

"Caring employees who provide excellent customer service have been the key to Atmos Energy's success," said Robert W. Best, chairman, president and chief executive officer. "Customer service will be even more important for our success during the next 100 years."

Celebrations are planned at all Atmos Energy regional offices on May 16, 2006, in conjunction with a company telecast to all employees.

A brief overview adds perspective to the progress since Atmos Energy's predecessor began:

1906

2006
  • One of the original founders borrowed money just to get pipe unloaded from a rail car to start the drilling for natural gas.
  • Trees were hollowed out to create wood pipes to carry natural gas, in some cases.
  • Employees dug entire pipeline trenches with picks and shovels.
  • Horse-drawn wagons were used to carry equipment for the fast-growing novelty of cooking without firewood.

  • Today Atmost Energy has revenues of $4.9 billion and assets of $5.6 billion, with utility operations in 12 states.
  • Atmos Energy owns more than 87,000 miles of piplines, primarily plastic.
  • Employees use back hoes, boring machines and still need shovels.
  • Atmos Energy's fleet includes 5,600 trucks, cars and other vehicles.

Atmos Energy Corporation is the country's largest natural gas-only distributor, serving about 3.2 million gas utility customers. Atmos Energy's utility operations serve more than 1,500 communities in 12 states from the Blue Ridge Mountains in the East to the Rocky Mountains in the West. Atmos Energy's nonutility operations, organized under Atmos Energy Holdings, Inc., operate in 22 states. They provide natural gas marketing and procurement services to industrial, commercial and municipal customers and manage company-owned natural gas pipeline and storage assets, including one of the largest intrastate natural gas pipeline systems in Texas.
