DALLAS, Texas -- September 23, 2007 -- In parts of the deep South, some customers suspend their natural gas service during the summer months and then call the company to re-establish service when cold weather arrives. With cooler weather ahead, Atmos Energy Corporation (NYSE: ATO), the nation's largest natural gas-only utility, is reminding customers to call now to sign up for service before the winter rush.

"Our customers should be warm and comfortable as the weather gets colder, and we want to help them be prepared," said John Paris, president of Atmos Energy's Mid-Tex Division. "Atmos Energy customers use natural gas to heat their homes because it's the most efficient and affordable way to stay warm during the winter."

Customer contact centers for Atmos Energy are already experiencing increased calls, with more than 15,000 natural gas turn-on requests in September throughout the company's 12-state service territory. In 2006, more than 165,000 customers started or resumed service in the fall.

"Once the mercury starts dropping, we get inundated with calls and our schedules fill up rapidly," Paris said. "We use all of our resources to provide safe and reliable natural gas service to our customers, and our customers will benefit from calling us now."

Tips for calling

The best time to call is during the evening or on weekends. Mondays are typically a very busy day, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Atmos Energy's two customer contact centers, which are both in Texas, receive approximately 20,000 calls per day. Both centers are open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. People who call during a busy time can use the automated phone system to schedule a return call from an agent, rather than wait on hold.

To re-establish or start new service, please call Atmos Energy toll-free at 1-888-ATMOS-00 or 888-286-6700, to speak with an agent.

Energy assistance and efficiency

Energy assistance funds are also available to help pay monthly gas bills for those who qualify. Customers can go to the Atmos Energy Web site, www.atmosenergy.com, and look under "Energy Assistance" for help in locating assistance agencies in their state.
