Huntington Appoints Thompson as Director of Strategy and
Business Segment Performance

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- April 6, 2009 -- Huntington Bancshares Inc. today announced the appointment of Mark Thompson as senior executive vice president and director of Strategy and Business Segment Performance, effective April 20. In this newly-created role, he will be responsible for the strategic planning with our various business units with the goal of improved financial performance and revenue growth.

“I am excited to have Mark join the Huntington team. His extensive experience leading business areas through transformational periods and driving revenue in various areas of the bank will be invaluable as we look to grow our business,” said Stephen D. Steinour, chairman, president and chief executive officer.

With nearly 25 years of banking experience, Thompson most recently served as executive vice president and deputy CFO of ABN AMRO, a company recently acquired by the Royal Bank of Scotland . During more than 8 years of service with Citizens Financial Group, the U.S. arm of the Royal Bank of Scotland , Thompson’s responsibilities included serving as CFO for one of Citizens’ largest regions and for the company’s Retail and Business Banking segment. Other responsibilities have included the oversight of special merger and acquisition projects and leadership of the Mortgage business. Thompson also previously served in various roles for Lenders Service Inc., Hatfield Phillips Inc., Admiralty Advisors Inc., Commonwealth Mortgage Company Inc. and KPMG Peat Marwick. A graduate of Boston College , he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a master’s degree in finance. Thompson is also a certified public accountant (CPA).
