SOUTH WINDSOR, Connecticut -- April 9, 2003 -- Gerber Scientific, Inc.'s (NYSE: GRB) sign making and specialty graphics subsidiary, Gerber Scientific Products (GSP), in collaboration with Teledyne Lighting and Display Products, a division of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY), unveiled its newest innovation, The Gerber NorthStar™ High Efficiency Lighting System, at the International Sign Expo at The Mandalay Bay Hotel and Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Gerber NorthStar System is designed to provide sign shops and their customers with a reliable, rugged, energy-efficient, and safe indoor/outdoor alternative to neon. GSP has entered into a long-term global strategic alliance with Teledyne for product development and worldwide distribution. This represents Gerber's first entry into electrical signage.

Elaine A. Pullen, president of GSP, said, "Our alliance brings together Teledyne's leading-edge L.E.D. technology with GSP's established distribution network, creating a revolutionary new system for sign manufacturers and their customers."

Marc Giles, president and chief executive officer of Gerber Scientific, Inc., added, "Gerber Scientific has built its reputation by challenging the convention of existing technologies and methodologies to produce new and cost-effective solutions for its customers. Innovations such as the Gerber NorthStar Lighting System and the many other 'first-of-its-kind' products introduced at the Sign Expo continue to underscore the company's mission and philosophy."

Gerber NorthStar is a flexible, high-efficiency channel letter illumination system utilizing revolutionary light emitting diode (L.E.D.) technology. Developed in conjunction with Teledyne, NorthStar exceeds current industry performance standards. NorthStar incorporates Teledyne's proprietary design that provides optimum letter brightness and longevity. In addition to its outstanding user-specific attributes, Gerber NorthStar offers important advantages to sign shop customers, including:

  • Up to 80 percent reduction in operating costs
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Wider operating temperature range
  • High reliability
  • Improved safety
  • Reduced electric shock potential
  • Enhanced durability (no neon glass breakage)

Gerber NorthStar will be available in May 2003 in red, amber, blue and green.
